Tèta Mona – Lebanese Soulfood

Author: Beth Lane

Teta Mona - Brunswick Daily

Tèta Mona, your friendly neighbourhood Lebanese. Truly embodying the Brunswick food scene, this is a family-run, no-frills joint producing simple, authentic food that will leave both your stomach and heart full. Over 10 years ago, brothers Antoine and Bechara Taouk opened Tèta Mona (translates to Grandmother Mona in Arabic) to bring their family’s traditional Lebanese recipes to Lygon Street. The space feels bohemian with a snug backyard complete with floral plastic tablecloths and fairy lights.

In keeping with its laid-back flair, it’s BYO but there’s a handful of Lebanese wines and interesting non-alcoholic options on offer too. Loose-fitting clothing is recommended and doggy-bag leftovers are essential. A table for two is preferred for sharing, although solo dining won’t be judged here. Vegan and gluten-free friends, you won’t be disappointed.

Their secret recipes stay hidden within a cosy kitchen in the heart of the restaurant. The banquet-style menu allows you to mix and match the dishes however your heart desires. The food arrives on vintage ceramic plates as and when it’s ready like a little mezze train. I’d recommend the uber-garlicky green beans, spicy lamb cigars and pulled chicken tenderloins. I trust that you’ll order the hummus et al because what is a meal without a dip?
